Udta Teer, the spy comedy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, collected ₹19.45 crore net in India over its first three days, according to trade tracker Sacnilk. Each day of the weekend was bigger than the one before. The film opened in cinemas on Friday, 23 October.
It earned ₹4.10 crore on Friday, ₹7.25 crore on Saturday and ₹8.10 crore on Sunday, its best day so far. Outlook reported that Sunday's figure was 11.7 per cent higher than Saturday's. The three-day India gross stands at ₹23.08 crore. Worldwide gross is ₹27.58 crore, of which ₹4.50 crore has come from overseas markets, including ₹1.75 crore on Sunday alone.
A modest opening, then growth
Sacnilk's report on opening day noted that ₹4.10 crore fell short of Khurrana's five biggest openers. Audiences then built up through the weekend. Reported occupancy rose from 13 per cent on Friday to 21 per cent on Saturday and 25 per cent on Sunday, when the film played in 6,020 shows across the country.
Sunday alone brought about 3.61 lakh ticket sales, and the three-day total is estimated at roughly 8.67 lakh, Outlook and The Hollywood Reporter India said, both citing Sacnilk. These early figures are trade estimates and are often revised once final data comes in.
What the film is about
Udta Teer is the directorial debut of Aakash Kaushik, who also wrote it. In Outlook's account of the plot, Khurrana's character, Bilal Ahmad, is a Pakistani intelligence agent who is left without his memory after a blast and comes to believe he is Indian. He joins a security unit and, without realising it, helps its officers catch genuine enemy spies. Sara Ali Khan's character works in the finance department of the defence ministry and is also Bilal's wife and colleague.
Gulshan Grover, Ram Kapoor, Rahul Bose and Mukul Dev appear in supporting roles, as do Supriya Pilgaonkar, Brijendra Kala, Suhail Nayyar and Sandeep Anand.
The Hollywood Reporter India noted that this is Dharma Productions' fourth film with Sikhya Entertainment, following The Lunchbox, Kill and Gyaarah Gyaarah. It also reported that Khurrana's last film in cinemas before this was Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, released in 2025.
Mixed reception
Outlook said the film opened to a mixed response from critics and audiences. In its review, The Hollywood Reporter India wrote that the film "enters an endless loop of defeating itself", saying it flits between a tourism-advert look and an inverted Dhurandhar template.
Saturday's collection was more than three-quarters higher than Friday's, and Sunday added a further 11.7 per cent. Whether that growth lasts will be clearer once the first weekday collections come in.
