The Ministry of Railways today officially released the first high-definition renders and a prototype walk-through of the long-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper coaches. Designed for long-distance overnight travel, these trains are set to replace the current Rajdhani Express rakes starting March 2026, offering a "boutique hotel on wheels" experience.

Ergonomics and Tech Features

The new coaches feature a significant upgrade in passenger comfort, including anti-jerk technology, vacuum-based toilets (similar to aircraft), and carbon-fiber reinforced interior panels for a quieter cabin environment. Each berth is equipped with individual reading lights, USB-C charging ports, and a specialized "sensory climate control" system that adjusts temperatures based on occupancy.

Why It Matters

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is the final piece in India's high-speed rail puzzle. While the chair-car version revolutionized 6-8 hour travel, the sleeper version targets the high-revenue 12-16 hour routes (like Delhi-Mumbai or Bengaluru-Chennai). By reaching top speeds of 160kmph with superior acceleration, these trains are expected to reduce travel time by up to 15%, making rail travel a viable, sustainable alternative to domestic flights.
