Apple on Monday, 26 October, announced a redesigned iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display, its A20 Pro chip and IP67-rated protection against water and dust. Pre-orders open on 28 October, with deliveries and store availability beginning on 6 November.
In India, the Wi-Fi model starts at ₹82,900 and the Wi-Fi + Cellular version at ₹1,00,900, according to The Indian Express. With Apple's education savings, the starting price falls to ₹76,900. In the United States, the tablet starts at $699 for Wi-Fi and $849 with cellular. Apple said pre-orders would be open in 36 countries and regions, including the US. The new TechWoven Smart Folio case costs ₹8,500 in India.
Screen and design
The tablet is 5.4 mm thick. It is sold in midnight or starlight, and buyers can choose 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage. Its bezels are about 24 per cent thinner than before, so the larger screen fits in roughly the same footprint as the previous model, The Indian Express reported.
Apple says the OLED panel can peak at 1,200 nits, over double the previous iPad mini, with deeper blacks and stronger contrast. An optional nano-texture finish reduces glare. A feature Apple calls the Acoustic Display uses woofers built into the screen to produce deeper bass and more volume.
Chip, connectivity and cameras
The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometre process. Compared with the last generation, Apple claims AI work runs up to 4.5 times faster and multithreaded CPU tasks up to 60 per cent faster. Graphics performance is up to 2.7 times higher, according to the company's figures as reported by The Indian Express.
Apple's N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular models get Apple's own C2 modem, which the company says speeds up mobile data by as much as 50 per cent. A 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera now sits on the landscape edge, which Apple says suits video calls. The rear camera is 12 megapixels and records 4K video at up to 60 frames per second.
The iPad mini runs iPadOS 27, with what Apple describes as the next generation of Apple Intelligence and a redesigned Siri that can draw on personal context and on-screen content. It works with the Apple Pencil Pro and the Apple Pencil (USB-C), both sold separately.
Apple vice president of Hardware Engineering Dave Pakula called the tablet "a huge leap forward for users who love having the full iPad experience in the palm of their hand".
Timing
TechCrunch noted that Apple revealed the tablet only days before its "Pro and Tell" event, which was scheduled for Wednesday. Apple's own announcement says the new iPad mini will be available at Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Resellers from 6 November, in midnight and starlight finishes.
